an excellent topical application where Staphylococcus and/or
Streptococcus bacteria are a problem or where cleansing and soothing
together are important e.g., burns, skin rashes, nail infections or acne.

History
Manuka is a small native tree or shrub
abundant throughout New Zealand. Kanuka is separated from
Manuka by its larger size, smaller leaves and flowers. Both
plants were traditionally used for their medicinal properties
by the Maori and early settlers. The common name tea-plant
was given by Captain James Cook, who along with many early
settlers made tea from the leaves. This is likely to be the
reason why Manuka and Kanuka are wrongly confused with the
Australian tea-tree.
Attractive to bees, Manuka flowers also
make great Manuka honey that also contains some antibacterial
properties. Much scientific research is now proving the effectiveness
of Manuka.
Traditional Medical Use
The leaves were used in vapour baths.
A decoction of the leaves was taken for urinary and
other internal complaints and was also used as a febrifuge
(reducing fever).
The white gum was applied to scalds and burns and was
taken to allay coughing.
An infusion of the bark was used internally and externally
as a sedative.
A decoction of bark relieved diarrhoea and dysentery.
Sap drained from a length of tree trunk was used as
a blood and breath purifier.
Leaves and bark were boiled and the decoction was applied
for various pains such as stiff back.
Seed capsules were boiled and the fluid was used externally
to reduce inflammation.
Young shoots were chewed and swallowed for dysentery.
A poultice of pounded capsules was used to dry an open
wound or running sore.
Capsules were chewed every ten minutes until the pain
of colic subsided.
The leaves and bark were boiled in water and the liquid
was used successfully for inflamed breasts.
The liquid was also used to treat mouth, throat and
eye troubles, and as a mouthwash and gargle.
